30 people arrested as EFCC storm Lagos hotel for alleged fraud

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested 30 suspects during a raid on Parktonian Hotel in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

The operatives were alleged to have gained entry into the occupants’ rooms by seizing the master cards from the management of the hotel at gunpoint.

It was gathered that some of the occupants were naked under the duvet when the operatives gained entry into the rooms.

One of the victims, while lamenting the invasion, told the Peoples Gazette, “I was naked, and I had to beg them (for me) to put something on. I am actually hypertensive, but I put myself together because I am not a criminal in any way.”

An eyewitness said to the publication, “They broke into the hotel and threatened to shoot the receptionists and management workers if they didn’t immediately release the master access card to them. So, the hotel workers had to comply immediately.”

According to the newspaper, it was learnt that no fewer than 13 guests were whisked away by the EFCC operatives during the raid.

Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesperson for the EFCC, later confirmed the raid in a statement.

He said the operatives acted on verified intelligence targeted at suspects at Parktonian Hotel, adding that 30 suspects were arrested during the raid.

He said, “Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, acting on verified intelligence, carried out a sting operation targeted at cybercrime suspects at Parktonian Hotel in the Lekki area of Lagos State in the early hours of Tuesday.

“During the exercise, 30 suspects were arrested. Of this number, 24 have been established to be involved in internet-related fraud. The operation was executed without incident as the facility had been under surveillance for weeks, during which the commission was able to isolate the rooms where the suspects were lodged.

“Access to the rooms was seamless as the commission has a standard procedure for accessing such facilities without application of force or discomfort to guests. No guest of the hotel was molested.

“But the commission observes a disturbing trend in which cybercrime suspects now employ kept ladies who feign nakedness as a decoy to distract operatives of the commission to enable them to destroy incriminating evidence before arrest.”

Military Men Kill Three Traders In Lagos Spare Parts Market Over N200

The crisis began when a military officer and his orderly visited the market on Tuesday to change the spare part he bought from a trader.

Trigger-happy military personnel have shot dead three traders at the famous Ladipo Spare Parts Market in Lagos State over the payment of N200 gate pass into the area.

One of the victims was a businessman, identified only as Felix, aka Tiger, and two other yet-to-be-identified traders who were shot dead at the Aguiyi Ironsi International Trade Centre in the Paramo area of Ladipo Market, Lagos State.

The crisis began when a military officer and his orderly visited the market on Tuesday to change the spare part he bought from a trader.

On their way out, some union members, who were at the market entrance, reportedly demanded payment of N200 from them for a gate pass.

It was learnt that the request infuriated the military men, and in the process, an argument ensued between them and the union members.

A source in the market told our correspondent that the union members allegedly beat the military man and his orderly, adding that the soldiers mobilised three other personnel, who allegedly shot the victims to death.

The trader said, “What happened was that a military man came with his orderly in the morning to change a spare part that he bought from a trader in the market since last week. He came to change it because it did not work, but the military man did not wear his uniform when he came into the market.

“When he was leaving, the union boys at the entrance of the gate told him to pay N200 for a gate pass. But because he refused to pay, it turned into a fight, and the boys beat the military man and his orderly. So, he went back to his base, returned with three other boys and everywhere scattered as they started shooting.

“About three people have been killed; in fact, a trader, Felix, aka Tiger, whose shop is located on my line, was part of the people that were killed by stray bullets. Felix was carrying his goods into his shop during the brawl when a stray bullet hit him.

“We quickly rushed him to the hospital, but he died on the way. The incident happened around 1pm, but the military man came to the market around 9am.”

However, the Director, Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Airforce, Edward Gabkwat, who gave another version of the story, said a soldier and his civilian friend were in the market for debt collection from a trader when a fight broke out between the soldier and the debtor.

He said, “It was a matter of self-defence; it was purely a domestic matter that went south. A soldier and a civilian friend went to the market for debt collection; whether the debt was for the soldier or civilian, we don’t know. But in the process, a fight ensued between the soldier and the alleged debtor, and the debtor and other civilians pounced on the soldier.

“It was an unfortunate situation. It wasn’t as if it was the air force men that opened fire, but the rifle, which belongs to the air force personnel, has been retrieved. I understand one or two people died, but it is unconfirmed. Our base commander has been told to get to the root of the matter.”

The lawyer to Kanu, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, also corroborated this claim, adding that it was too late for Kenya to dismiss the “compelling evidence.”

The Kenya government detailed security operatives to ransack the apartment where Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, stayed in the country when news filtered in last Thursday that his United Kingdom passport was left behind in the East African country, competent sources have informed SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters learned that the Kenya operatives broke into the apartment and searched desperately for the UK passport, but it was eventually not found.

The sources noted that the UK passport had been safely kept away from the Kenya apartment before the intelligence was deliberately released to ” serve as evidence that the Kenya government was involved in the unconventional abduction of Kanu to Nigeria.”

The lawyer to Kanu, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, also corroborated this claim, adding that it was too late for Kenya to dismiss the “compelling evidence.”

Ejiofor said, “My happiness is that by that development (of the leaving over of Kanu’s UK passport in Kenya), the desperate denials of the Kenya government in the abduction of Kanu have been put to rest. Earlier, I had compelling evidence to show the world a conspiracy between Kenya and Nigerian governments to abduct Kanu through an unconventional process.

“Kenya became apprehensive that we had other compelling evidence. As soon as the fact of his passport still in Kenya was made public, they quickly went to the apartment where Kanu stayed in Kenya and ransacked the place. But it was too late for them. These are people who are telling us that they don’t know about what happened to Kanu.”

SaharaReporters had on July 10 reported that new evidence that Kenyan authorities were guilty in the arrest and extradition of Nnamdi Kanu emerged with his UK passport left behind in the country.

A UK Newspaper, The Guardian, had stated this in a report, adding that Kanu got a Kenya visa which was to expire in June, and he had been around in the country before his sudden arrest and extradition.

“Evidence seen by the Guardian shows Kanu entered Kenya this year on his British passport on a visa expiring in June. His UK passport remains in Kenya. Kanu did not have a Nigerian passport, his family said, and he has verbally renounced his Nigerian citizenship in broadcasts.

“The abduction of a person from a foreign country with the aim of rendition to justice is illegal under international law,” the UK newspaper report had said.

SaharaReporters reported that Kanu recounted his experience in Kenya while speaking with his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, saying he was “mercilessly beaten and tortured” in the East African country before his extradition to Nigeria.

Ejiofor had confirmed the words of Kanu during an interview adding that Kanu told him how he was detained not in the Kenya official detention centres but a private residence for about eight days before his extradition to Nigeria.

This is despite the Kenyan authorities’ denial that they had anything to do with the arrest and extradition of Kanu to Nigeria.

Nigerian Man Jumps From Three-Storey Building To Avoid Being Arrested

Nigerian national Robinson Ibuka Ade, allegedly accused of a romance scam, has jumped out of a window of a third-storey building to escape arrest from the police in Pattaya, Thailand.
Robinson and a 23-year-old Thai woman female national, Thidarat Biraban, were caught on July 6 and taken to the police detention, accused of jointly defrauding people in an internet romance scam in the country.

The Thai Criminal Court wanted the suspects over the allegations of collaborating to swindle and import fake data into a computer system.

Following their arrest, the Thai police have discovered and retrieved cash of 148,000 Thai baht, 2,000 US dollars, and two ATM cards from them.

They were nabbed after some victims in Nakhon Sri Thammarat filed a complaint, stating that they had lost 905,000 baht from an Instagram account user, “davilalinda720”, who purportedly claimed that he was an American soldier who fought in Syria. The account owner would then pretend to the victim to transfer a large amount of money several times.

According to the initial investigation, at least 40 victims who issued similar reports at Don Mueng Police Station had claimed that they were defrauded by the same Instagram account and lost 112,000 baht in total.

The police then demanded an arrest warrant from the Bangkok Criminal Court. The probe revealed that the account owner was living in a condo in Pattaya.

The Nigerian suspect was apprehended inside the room. He was eventually arrested as he attempted to escape and jumped and fell from the balcony of the third floor of the building. He was seized immediately by police on the ground outside of the condo.

Thidarat, who Robinson seemed willing to leave behind based on leaping off the balcony, with a total amount of 51,000 baht in her possession, was also discovered in the condo.

The couple was taken into police custody at Don Mueng Police Station, while the other victims were also questioned for further information.

According to police, Robinson was given medical treatment for his fall, which he survived without serious injuries.

A man believed to have been “drunk” has been killed by a shark after he walked into the sea to urinate at a Brazilian beach.

The mutilated corpse of 51-year-old Marcelo Rocha Santos was pulled from the water after the shark attacked him.
The shark had torn off Santos’s hand and bitten a large chunk out of his leg.
The incident took place at Piedade Beach in the Brazilian city of Jaboatao dos Guararapes on Saturday 10th July.

Santos’s lifeless body was taken to hospital in the neighbouring city of Recife, where he was later pronounced dead.
Mechanic, Edriano Gomes, told reporters that the victim had been drinking with friends. He entered the water at around 2 pm when the sky started to cloud over, and the sea was becoming turbulent.

Gomes said: “It was a friend of mine who was in the sea with the person who was attacked. Suddenly, he saw the man struggling. There was a lot of blood in the water.”

Glazier Ademir Sebastiao was in the water with the victim when the attack took place.

He told reporters: “As the beach has no bathroom, I went into the sea to pee. I was beside him with the water up to our waists.”

Marcelo’s friends brought the victim to shore, where he fell to the ground unconscious.

Father Mbaka Defends Nnamdi Kanu in new video

Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministries, Enugu, Fr Ejike Mbaka, has again reacted to the arrest of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), had claimed that Operatives of Nigeria’s security intelligence intercepted Kanu.

Kanu was arrested in Kenya recently and brought to Nigeria by the Nigerian government. Last week, Kanu was blindfolded and sneaked into the courtroom by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in handcuffs while his legs were chained.

Reacting in a video obtained by SaharaReporters on Sunday, Mbaka says the arrest of Kanu will not stop insecurity in the country. The cleric defended Kanu’s agitation for Biafra, saying if things were working well in Nigeria, “Kanu” would not be an issue for the government.

He said, “Since you arrested him (Kanu), we have lost many lives. So, of what use is his arrest? After he was arrested, the kidnapping didn’t stop in the north; many students were kidnapped in Kaduna last week. Where were our security agencies? Why can’t they use the same temerity to arrest all those people doing this thing (killings)? Arresting Kanu will not solve the problem.”

Mbaka blamed rising insecurity in the country on politicians who pay huge sums of money to buy arms for political thugs to manipulate elections.

He said, “Most of the politicians will buy ammunition and give it to millions of youth, and after the elections, no one collects the ammunition back. There is “herdsmenism,” people have abandoned the villages, and there are no jobs. Peoples’ farms are ravaged and they are kidnapped and killed. His arrest aggravates the problem.

“Has anybody seen Kanu kill anyone? Kanu is not a murderer. Have you caught him with guns? Why arrest someone who has never kidnapped anyone? Our land must yield an increase. Kanu is not herdsmen, kidnappers, or bandits, or Boko Haram. He does not carry ammunition and he is not even an unknown gunman. My job is to say what the spirit asked me to say.

“If you use the same aggression you deployed to arrest Kanu to address terrorism, things will change. It would help if you used the same temerity to address poverty, herdsmenism, injustice, corruption, and unhealthy tribalism. I am for truth and justice.

“I cannot support terrorism. There is agitation everywhere. All the men of God are agitating silently. The police and the army are agitating. Do you blame them? If they talk, they will be killed. In the mosque, there is agitation. You don’t arrest the agitation. You arrest the cause of it. People are hungry and angry. Millions are idle and an idle hand is the devil’s workshop.

“If Nigeria is doing very well, will Kanu emerge? I am for justice, equity and fair play. Look at what is happening in the North, the north is finished.”
